Winter has its own unique charm with cosy fireside evenings, warm blankets, and holiday festivities. However, for some of us, the shorter days and colder temperatures can lead to a dip in spirits; particularly with all the rain and wind here in the UK, it can be hard to recall the memories and feelings of the warm and sun-kissed days of summer. The good news is that there are holistic ways to stay upbeat and embrace the magic of winter. Let’s explore seven ways to elevate your winter spirit and keep your energy high during the coldest months.
Embrace the Power of Light
The winter season often means less natural daylight- today is the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year- which can have a significant impact on our mood and energy levels. To counteract this, invest in full-spectrum light bulbs that mimic natural sunlight. Place them strategically in your home to create a bright and cheerful atmosphere. I used to have a lamp that mimicked sunrise as an alarm clock, and it honestly was such a good investment. You can also take advantage of the sunny days we do get by spending time outdoors, absorbing the natural light, and boosting your vitamin D levels.
Practice Mindfulness and Meditation
Cultivating mindfulness and meditation practices can be particularly beneficial during the winter months. Notice how you’re feeling, accept that these emotions exist, and then decide what steps you’ll take to get yourself back on track. Meditation and mindfulness practices help you stay present, reduce stress, and connect with your inner self. Even a few minutes of deep breathing or meditation each day can work wonders for your mood and overall well-being. Consider creating an intentional cosy meditation corner with warm blankets and soft cushions to enhance the experience. I’ve got plenty of meditations to help you settle into yourself; check out my shop here.
Stay Active
Although its very tempting to hunker down and avoid going outside in the dark, winter should never be an excuse to neglect your physical health. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Find a winter activity you enjoy; there are lots of beautiful hikes, ski hills in some areas, or even simply taking brisk walks in the crisp air. If outdoor activities are not your cup of tea, consider indoor options like yoga, dance, or joining a local gym. Although getting there is a struggle, moving your body will really help you feel better. The gym I go to is located in Bungay, Suffolk. It is a woman’s only gym and Leigh, the owner, is amazing and so understanding. I recommend checking her out; she offers coaching both online and in-person and really understands what women trying to get fit go through.
Nourish Your Body
Eating seasonally is a great way to embrace winter and boost your mood. Opt for warming foods like hearty soups (I love soup season- butternut squash and chilli soup is my fave!), root vegetables, and herbal teas. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and walnuts, can also help support your mental well-being. Additionally, staying hydrated is crucial, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Create a Cosy Sanctuary
Winter is the perfect time to transform your living space into a warm and inviting sanctuary. Decorate with soft, fuzzy blankets, plush cushions, and warm colours to create a cosy atmosphere. Light scented candles or diffuse essential oils like cinnamon, clove, pine or cedarwood to enhance the ambiance and promote relaxation. Firelight, either artificial or real, really increases the ambience and is so relaxing. Watch the flames dance and journal how it makes you feel.
Connect with Loved Ones
Again, although it’s tempting to hunker down and avoid the outside, social connections are essential for maintaining a positive outlook during the winter. Make an effort to stay in touch with friends and family, even if it means virtual get-togethers; bring back the lockdown days of Zoom quizzes if you must (but a pub quiz is equally as fun!). Plan cosy gatherings, potlucks, or game nights to keep your spirits high and create cherished memories.
Pursue Creative Hobbies
Winter provides the perfect opportunity to dive into creative pursuits that you might have been putting off. Whether it’s painting, writing, crafting, or playing a musical instrument, engaging in a creative hobby can be a great source of joy and satisfaction. The sense of accomplishment from creating something beautiful can be incredibly uplifting. Plus, these are all activities you can do inside in your warm, cosy space. Creation helps us align and balance our sacral chakras, which are integral to our overall emotional wellbeing. In conclusion, winter doesn’t have to be a season of hibernation and low spirits. By incorporating these holistic approaches into your daily routine, you can elevate your winter spirit and maintain a positive outlook throughout the colder months. Embrace the magic of winter, make the most of its unique charm, and keep your energy levels high as you navigate the season with a sense of joy and fulfilment. Remember, staying upbeat is not only about surviving winter but thriving and flourishing during this enchanting time of year.
